okay so I was thinking about Laura Hale and how she and Derek were both at school the day of the fire

and I was thinking about how Laura must have become the alpha immediately after the old alpha (whichever family member it was) died in the fire 

which made me realize that she was probably sitting in class or something when out of nowhere she would have felt the change, felt this new power sweep over her and settle under her skin

and in that moment she would know 

the fire department hasn’t even made it out to the conflagration that used to be their house yet and the school won’t receive a visit from the Sheriff for another hour and she and Derek won’t be pulled out of class until sometime after that but Laura knows the entire time that something terrible has happened because she wasn’t next in line; even if something had happened to the alpha it wouldn’t have passed to her but it did and the reasons behind that are unthinkable

and I think she’d be so overwhelmed by this new power zinging through her veins and the implications of that power that she’d break down, excuse herself from class and find an empty storage closet to hide and take a moment to get herself back together because she knows Derek is tuned in to her and if he senses her distress he’ll be just as worried as she is and she wants more than anything to shield him from that for just a little bit longer

because she’s always had the instinct to protect her little brother but she’s the alpha now which makes it her job more than ever before to keep him safe

so she’d pull it together and go back to class and not hear a word the teacher was saying because she’s focused on listening to Derek, to his steady heartbeat, muffled through the walls of the school but still audible, and she just sits and wills her heartbeat to match his as she waits for someone to come find them and deliver the terrible terrible news that their family is somehow dead, and she counts Derek’s heartbeats to distract herself from asking how 

and when she’s finally called to the principal’s office Derek is already there and as soon as he sees her he knows too because he can feel that she’s the alpha so she just pulls him into a fierce hug as the principal haltingly tells them what they both already know

basically I just have a lot of Laura Hale feelings oh my god help someone take my computer away from me
